How to wash pillows? The best-kept secret

How often do you wash your pillows, and what method do you use? Note: If it's been more than six months since you've cleaned them , then it's the perfect time to give them a good cleaning.

But how? Let's begin...

Washing feather or fiber-filled pillows

The good news in these cases is that you can wash them in the washing machine .

However, for best results, it is recommended to wash two pillows at a time to avoid damaging the washing machine and keep it balanced.

It is also recommended that, if possible, washing with a spin cycle is not carried out , and that top-loading washing is avoided.

Otherwise, you can place the pillows vertically in the top load, as this way they are less likely to wrap around the agitator and damage it.

Reading pillow care labels is very important. Follow the instructions to protect the materials and the product's lifespan . If there is no label, use warm water and a gentle wash cycle.

How to dry them?

A good idea is to rinse the pillows in cold water and turn them inside out to dry. You can dry them on low heat, or shake and turn them frequently.

It's best to do this in a well-ventilated area, with non-direct sunlight and plenty of fresh air. For example, in the morning or at dusk.

Washing foam pillows

It's very important to know that foam pillows CANNOT be put in the washing machine . However, many of them have a removable cover that can be washed according to the instructions for each product.

To remove dust from a foam pillow, you can vacuum it on both sides using the upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner.

You can also place the pillow in a dryer on the no-heat or air-only cycle for 20 minutes.

Try wiping dirty areas with a cloth soaked in a soapy solution and rinsing with a damp cloth. Let the pillow dry completely before replacing it on the bed.

Some foam pillows include hand-washing instructions. But keep in mind that wet foam is heavy and tears easily, so be careful not to damage the product.

When is it time to replace your pillows?

No matter how careful you are when washing your pillows, it's important to know that it's best to replace them every so often.

Pillows inevitably harbor mites, mold, and dirt, as well as bacteria and organisms that can cause allergies and respiratory problems.

How do you know when it's time to throw them away?

If you fold your pillow in half and it doesn't spring back, that's one of the most obvious signs that you need a new one.

If when you rest your head on the pillow it touches the bed as if there were nothing to cushion your weight, then you need to replace your pillow.

If you wake up with neck pain because you can't find the right position for your pillow, it may be losing its bounce and elasticity, and you may need to get a new pillow.
